Benefits of Navajo Tea

Navajo tea is also called “Cota”, “Hopi Tea” or Dried Greenthread. This wonderful plant is native to the Western United States and has been used by many different Native American tribes especially in the Southwest, hence the most popular name of Navajo tea.

You may have also heard it by the name “Indian Tea” but we know why that’s wrong, right?

Like with all herbal tea, please proceed with caution when consuming this tea and consult with a doctor if possible.

Not many studies have been done on the exact benefits of Navajo tea but here are a few historical uses that the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) lists on their website.

  • Relieves stomach aches and aids in digestion
  • Used to reduce fevers
  • Treat kidney problems
  • It’s anti-parasitic

The main compound in Navajo Tea is luteolin, which UTEP cites a 1992 study that attributes a wide range of medicinal effects to luteolin including:

  • anti-cancer
  • anti-cataract
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antioxidant
  • antispasmodic
  • antitussive (against coughs)
  • antiviral, choleretic (improves gall bladder function)
  • diuretic
  • hepatoprotective (liver protective)

The main benefit that I definitely have seen from the tea is just a sense of wholeness that I get when I sit down and enjoy this tea.

It’s a different kind of calming effect from similar teas such as chamomile because the flavor is naturally sweeter and there is just a comforting vibe that’s unique to it…it’s hard to explain.
